Enfleurage is an ancient technique of using solid fat, animal or vegetable to create a permeable base in which to capture delicate aromas of flowers that would otherwise be destroyed in other methods of extraction like distillation. This time-consuming process takes several days or even weeks of applying, removing, and applying fresh flowers to the fat base. What is left behind is a semi-solid fat that has been impregnated with the aroma of the flowers. This fat product, called a pomade, can then be used as a solid perfume, in the production of creams or lotions, or washed in alcohol to produce an alcohol extract for use in liquid perfumes.
